so hot you’re cool

I am living a rerun. Well, not exactly a rerun, but I am repeating things. I took college algebra years ago when my brain was almost fully formed and no where near it’s current mush. I remember the class well. I sat in the very back row next to a girl who’s name I cannot remember. “Micky?” Anyway, we had a ball in that class. We talked and laughed and made fun of the slow people around us for weeks. Then, we looked up and realized we had no idea what was going on. At least, I had no idea. I ended up getting a Y in the class, which means I dropped out with a failing grade. Sigh, some things from your past just don’t get erased until you take the class over again. The sad thing is, I had to test into the class and since it had been SO LONG, I fell a bit short. I have now taken three lower math classes just to get up to the level I was back then. Talk about frustrating.

The class actually started last Wednesday but I felt that attending my son’s high school graduation had precedence over math. I was hoping my teacher would agree and she did. I attended class for the first time tonight. I have to say, it wasn’t too bad. The teacher “Professor Jessie” is well on her way to ‘sainthood’ I am sure. She is also a shining example of why I don’t think I would be a good teacher for any age, especially adults/college.  At times I joke about not being able to do math of any kind but, frankly, I lie. I actually can do math when I want to AND it makes sense. What is really scary is to see grown adults in a math class not being able to count to ten on their fingers. (yes they had all ten) I really wonder how these people function in the world.

I have to admit that I am not the sharpest tool in the shed though. When I got to campus tonight, I went looking for my class and drew a total blank. The buildings are lettered and the doors are numbered….so you’d think I would be able to find it. I didn’t have much of a clue, even though I went to this same school for two years….not long ago….so I asked someone that looked like “faculty.” She actually didn’t know what I was talking about either.(and she WAS faculty)  I pointed to a building and asked if that was possibly it and sure enough, her memory was jogged. Yes indeed, I had discovered my building. The funny thing? This is the same building and yes, the very same room that I had not only one, but TWO classes in during the two years I was on campus.

I felt a little foolish for not recognizing the room number, but even more foolish for not remembering that all the rooms on campus are a bit chilly. This room in particular has actual meat hanging on hooks in the corners. I know I’ve been complaining about how stinking hot it has gotten, but seriously….do we need to sit in refrigerators in order to learn? I’m sure there is some deep purpose to the cold climate. In fact, next math class we are using building blocks the teacher said, and I’m pretty sure they are ice blocks…..cause I said so.
